Getting to Edinburgh

By plane

Edinburgh Airport is eight miles from George Square at the University.

To get from the airport to the university (or the conference hotels) there are a number of different options.

  • There is a regular shuttle bus service (Airlink 100) to the city centre. The Waverley train station stop is closest.  The trip usually takes around 25 minutes depending on traffic. Tickets cost £7 return (£4 single). From here you can take a taxi outside Waverley Station or follow the directions for walking in the 'by rail' section below.
  • There are also now trams (!) to the city centre.  The trip usually takes around 35 minutes depending on traffic. The stop nearest the Scott Monument on Princes St is closest.  Tickets cost £8 return (£5 single). From here you can take a taxi outside Waverley Station or follow the directions for walking in the 'by rail' section below.
  • Taxis will cost around £20 in either direction.

Further details on travel from the airport are available here

By rail

Edinburgh has a number of different train stations but the two served by most inter-city trains are Edinburgh Waverley (in the city centre) and Haymarket (in the west end).  Waverley is closest to George Square and the hotels.  There are taxis outside the train station but if you're without heavy bags it's likely easiest to reach the hotels on foot.

To reach the Ibis Hotel, exit Waverley Station towards Market St, cross Market St and climb the steps facing you (Fleshmarket Close).

These will take you to Cockburn St. Keep walking up Cockburn St to the left until it comes to a dead end at the Royal Mile.  Turn left on the Royal Mile and walk around 50m until you reach South Bridge.  Turn right onto South Bridge and head south for half a block. The Ibis Hotel is here. NOTE: Your hotel is the brand new Ibis (Ibis Centre South Bridge) at 77 South Bridge. Confusingly there is an older Ibis 100m behind here at 6 Hunter Square (Ibis Centre Royal Mile) at the corner of the Royal Mile and South Bridge. This is NOT your hotel! Here are walkit.com directions from Waverley Station to McEwan Hall within the university. This will take you past the new Ibis.

To reach the Premier Inn on foot follow the directions to the Ibis Hotel.  Walk past the Ibis until you reach Chambers St. Turn right on Chambers St  and walk along it until it ends at George IV Bridge. You will see Greyfriars Kirk and Greyfriars Bobby facing you.  Turn left on George IV bridge and get yourself across the various cross walks until you are on the side near Bobby's sandwich bar.  This is Forrest Rd. Walk along Forrest Road south, past Greggs and turn right on Lauriston Place. The Premier Inn is about 350m down Lauriston Place, past the Edinburgh College of Art.

To reach the Kenneth Mackenzie Suites following the directions to the Ibis Hotel. Walk past the Ibis, cross Chambers St and then cross South Bridge (now called Nicholson St). Keep walking south on South Bridge/Nicholson (the Festival Theatre will be on your right) until you reach Hill Place. Turn left at Hill Place and at the end of the block turn right on Richmond Place. Kenneth Mackenzie Suites are at 7 Richmond Place.

By car

From M8/M9/A1 head to the City bypass (A720). Take the Lothianburn exit (A702 - you'll see the dry ski slope) and head towards the city centre.  This will change names several times as it heads through Morningside and Bruntsfield.  After passing the Meadows and King's Theatre on your right you will approach Tollcross.  Turn right onto Lauriston Place (to the right of the HBOS building).  Lauriston Place will veer left as it becomes Forrest Rd. Get in the right lane and turn sharp right to double back around the Bedlam Theatre onto Bristo Place. Turn left onto Teviot Place, which will swing around the edge of the university campus and become Potterow. Turn right onto Crichton St and follow Crichton St into George Square.  The Chrystal Macmillan Building is in the back corner. For satnav users the postcode for the Chrystal Macmillan Building is EH8 9LD.

For more specific directions the University has a driving route planner here.
