38th UACES Annual Conference : Exchanging Ideas on Europe

Scotland¬ís First Minister Alex Salmond welcomed delegates to the 38th UACES Annual Conference, entitled ¬ĎExchanging Ideas on Europe¬í, hosted by the University of Edinburgh¬ís Europa Institute on 1-3 September 2008. The Europa Institute was proud to organise the biggest European Studies event ever held in the UK as part of its 40th birthday celebrations. The conference in Appleton Tower reflected the Institute¬ís engagement in advanced research and teaching on European integration as the longest-established specialist institute of its kind in the UK.

Scottish Government Europe Minister, Linda Fabiani was guest of honour at a gala dinner, hosted by University Principal Sir Timothy O’Shea on Tuesday 2 September. After the dinner, the Institute’s Chairman, Professor Sir David Edward, received an award to mark his lifetime achievement in the area of European studies.

Other events to mark the Europa Institute’s anniversary have included a lecture by the First Minister last December and a conference to mark the 50th anniversary of the Treaty of Rome in January.

Still to come is a lecture by Peter Sutherland, former European Commissioner and Director General of the WTO, on 9 December 2008.
