‘Distant Voices — Coming Home’ is an ESRC/AHRC funded project that creates songs that express and challenge the ways we think and feel about crime, punishment and reintegration. From academic conferences around the world, to radio play and music festivals, these songs have become a means to support change, and open up public dialogue.
We will be launching the project’s first album, ‘Not Known at This Address’ with live performances this May in Glasgow and Edinburgh.
The project began as a collaboration between Vox Liminis and the SCCJR at the University of Glasgow, and has extended to include the University of Edinburgh (Politics & IR / SPS) and the University of West of Scotland.
The project teams-up Scottish musicians and songwriters with people who have different kinds of experience of the criminal justice system to write and record songs. The musicians have worked in song writing ‘sessions’ to co-write with people in prison, people who have served community sentences, prison officers and governors, social workers and probation officers, victims of crime, families affected by imprisonment, academics and PGRs.
The list of artists appearing on the record includes Kris Drever, C Duncan, Emma Pollock, Admiral Fallow, Dave Hook (Solareye, Stanley Odd), Rachel Sermanni, Pronto Mama, Bdy_Prts, Fiskur and others. We hope that many of the co-writers will also be able to join us on the night to see their songs performed live.
