The Gender Politics Research Group (GPRG) is holding a small international workshop - ‘Gendering Institutions’ – on Monday 27th November in honour of the distinguished feminist political scientist Professor Joni Lovenduski who is receiving an honorary degree from University of Edinburgh at the Winter Graduation Ceremony on Tuesday November 28.
Professor Lovenduski (Professor Emerita and, formerly, Anniversary Professor of Politics at Birkbeck College University of London) is one of the pioneers who established the gender and politics field in the 1970s and 1980s. She has been at the forefront of work that analyses the gendered power dynamics in political institutions, and the unequal gendered outcomes they produce. Her co-authored book Political Recruitment was recently listed by the Guardian as one of the top ten books of all time on British politics.
Workshop participants include some of the leading proponents of feminist institutionalist approaches as well as early and mid-career scholars from the UK, Europe, and China. Cases range from informal gendered rules in the Chinese communist party to the institutional design of post conflict political settlements in Bosnia and Northern Ireland.
The workshop is jointly organised by GPRG, FIIN (Feminism and Institutionalism International Network) and the Political Settlements Research Programme.
