Russia, the Middle East, and Political Islam: Internal and External Challenges

The seminar examines Russia's external relations with the Middle East, and the changing nature of Islam within the Russian Federation. Guest speakers include: Alexander Pikayev, Institute of World Economy and International Relations, Roland Dannreuther, University of Edinburgh, Ruslan Kurbanov, Oriental Institute, Moscow and Domitilla Sagramoso, King's College, London. Alexander Pikayev, a leading specialist on the Iranian nuclear question, will provide a general dicussion on the Russian policy towards the Middle East. Ruslan Kurbanov is a specialist on the dynamics of radicalisation in the North Caucasus and will discuss the current challenges facing Muslims in Russia.
Russia and Islam: Institutions, Regions and Foreign Policy
Edinburgh, 19-20 June 2008
The team set up and managed the seminar in Edinburgh on 19-20 June 2008, which brought together 20 experts on North Caucasus, Russian politics, Muslim communities, nationalism, religion and foreign affairs. Paper-givers included UK scholars, international fellows from Tatarstan, Dagestan and Iran, as well as representatives from the institutional collaborators, the Oriental Institute and the SOVA Centre in Moscow.
