The project team presented papers at the BISA conference, Exeter on 16 December 2007. Roland Dannreuther presented a paper on ‘Russia and the Middle East', Luke March on ‘Official Nationalism from Putin to Medvedev – Managed or Unmanageable?’, Ekaterina Braginskaia on ‘Russia and the Institutionalisation of Islam: A Comparison with the UK and France’ and Matteo Fumagalli on ‘Trans-National Migration and Russian-Central Asian Relations’.
[29 Dec 2008]Three members of the project team, Roland Dannreuther, Luke March and Ekaterina Braginskaia, undertook a third research trip to Russia, 10 October - 1 November 2008. In two visits to Moscow, they had update meetings with project partners at the Oriental Institute and SOVA Center for Information and Analysis. They collected material and conducted interviews with representatives from official and unofficial Muslim organisations, religious leaders and Muslim scholars. A visit to Kazan, Tatarstan was arranged by research fellow Azat Khurmatullin, followed by the two principal investigators visiting Dagestan. Further interviews with academics, clerics and politicians were held in each location. Some images and impressions from the visit are available in the 'Gallery section.

On 17-18 September 2008, Luke March, Ekaterina Braginskaia and Roland Dannreuther attended an ESRC programme meeting at the Foreign and Commonwealth Office, London, for an information and discussion session with other award holders of the ESRC Radicalisation and Violence initiative and FCO analysts. The team delivered the first report on the project, which is available in 'Publications' section. Details of the meeting can be found here
Luke March and Ekaterina Braginskaia presented the paper ‘Russia and Islam: State Approaches, Radicalisation and the “War on Terror”’ at the conference ‘Representing Islam’ held at the University of Manchester 6 September 2008. The presentation is available in the ‘Publications’ page.

The project investigators have received a book contract from Routledge publishers for the book Russia and Islam: State, Society and Radicalism, which draws on research conducted for this project and will be published in September 2009. Further details are available here
The conference ‘Russia and Islam: Institutions, Regions and Foreign Policy’ was held in Edinburgh University, Old College on 19-20 June. Presentations were made by the project team, the research fellows, international visitors, and a range of leading experts on Russia and Islam around the UK (for details see ‘Conferences’ section of website).

Three international fellows will visit Edinburgh in June to conduct research for and assist with the project. Akhmet Yarlykapov (Institute of Ethnology and Anthropology, Moscow), Azat Khurmatullin (Russian Islamic University, Kazan) and Elaheh Koolaee (University of Tehran) will visit for three weeks. Shorter visits will be paid by Dina Malysheva (IMEMO, Moscow) and Alexander Verkhovsky and Galina Kozhevnikova (SOVA Center, Moscow).
