EXACT PhD Programme now underway

New EU-funded postgrad programme holds launch event.

Edinburgh Politics and IR are pleased to be participants in the new EU-funded Marie Curie International Training Network EXACT ('European Union External Action and its Institutional Architecture') together with its partners:  the University of Cologne and Charles University (Prague).

Edinburgh will participate in the training of all 12 EXACT Fellows, 5 of which will complete their PhDs with us as 'co-tutelles' (with degrees jointly awarded by Edinburgh and Cologne/Charles).

All EXACT Fellows have now begun their studies with research training in Cologne, which will be followed by a residence of 13 months in 2 separate European think tanks (1 in an EU national capital, 1 in Brussels), before completing their studies at their host institution.

The EXACT Initial Conference was held 21-2 October 2010 in Cologne.  It began with a roundtable discussion featuring an introductory address by Prof John Peterson of Edinburgh Politics/IR, followed by contributions from a diverse array of experts on EU external action, including Dr Elizabeth Bomberg and Prof Charlie Jeffery of Edinburgh Politics/IR.

A formal ceremony to mark the signing of the EXACT agreement by representatives of Edinburgh, Cologne and Charles then featured Charlie Jeffery wow-ing the locals with his fluent German!

The conference also featured a public lecture by Mikolaj Dowgielewicz, Secretary of State for European Affairs at the Polish Ministry of Foreign Affairs entitled 'The European Union after the Lisbon Treaty'.  The lecture was chaired by Professor Wolfgang Wessels of the University of Cologne and featured an introduction by Dr Werner Hoyer MdB, Minister of State at the German Federal Foreign Office and a current member of the German cabinet.

The 5 EXACT Fellows who are expected to complete their PhDs at Edinburgh, under the supervision of John Peterson, are (with nationalities indicated):
