PIR PhD Graduate appointed Ambassador

Dr Andrew Bennett named as Canada's first Ambassador of Religious Freedom

Andrew graduated with a PhD in Politics in 2002. He was supervised by Professor Alice Brown (Politics) and Professor Ged Martin (Centre of Canadian Studies). His thesis was entitled “Nations of distinction: an analysis of nationalist perspectives on constitutional change in Québec, Catalunya, and Scotland.”

While at Edinburgh Andrew played an active role in the work of the Centre of Canadian Studies, tutoring on its core undergraduate course and contributing to broader community building at the Centre. He was also involved in research on Scottish devolution at the University’s Institute of Governance.

Originally from Toronto, Dr Bennett’s career has included appointments at the Privy Council Office, Export Development Canada and Natural Resources Canada. He is currently Dean at Augustine College in Ottawa. Canadian Prime Minister, Stephen Harper, announced Dr Bennett's appointment as Ambassador on 19 February, 2013.
