Edinburgh PIR lecturer wins prestigious Teaching Grant

Carmen Gebhard, Programme Director of the MSc International and European Politics (IEP), has secured funding for the new taught postgraduate core course Analysing European Governance and Public Policy as a Jean Monnet Module for 2015-2018.

The proposed teaching project was selected from over 600 eligible submissions to the Erasmus+ scheme, which is funded by the Education, Audiovisual and Culture Executive Agency of the European Commission. Jean Monnet Modules are teaching projects by academics with an excellent profile in European Studies that involve new and innovative teaching, research and debating activities, and generally help to enhance the quality and visibility of the subject at their institution as well as at the national and international level. The aims are to promote research and teaching in European Union issues, create interest in the EU, build towards a basis for future poles of European knowledge as well as foster the introduction of a European Union angle into non EU related studies.
“Analysing European Governance and Public Policy” was created as part of a wider curriculum reform of the MSc IEP. The course aims to provide an overview of the various analytical and theoretical approaches to the study of European Governance (institutions, structures, decision-making processes within the EU institutions, and between organisational entities of the EU and other actors) and Public Policy (policy-making, multi-level dynamics, competence-sharing, differentiated integration, budgeting, implementation and compliance). It follows an interdisciplinary approach and consciously aims to overcome boundaries between different research strands and the way these are conveyed to students. It seeks to integrate the European Studies literature with insights from International Relations and other strands of political analysis to help students develop a comprehensive analytical toolkit that enables them to tackle research questions in a more rounded and original manner. The course places specific focus on self-empowered learning and student-centred teaching methods.
