Politics and International Relations (PIR): News

Edinburgh PIR ranked top in Scotland and 11th in UK

Politics and IR is delighted to announce its results for the Research Assessment Exercise 2008.

  • 55% of our research activity was rated 4* or 3*. This means that it is recognised as world leading (4*) or internationally excellent (3*) in terms of originality, signifiance and rigour.
  • We were ranked top Scottish university for Politics and IR, and 11th UK-wide, based on both average grades, and the proportion of 3* plus 4* research.
  • Of the top 11 UK departments, we were one of the larger submission. We returned the 5th highest number of staff of the top 11 departments.

The results show a significant upward trajectory from our 2001 results, when we were outside the top 25. Since then, a raft of new appointments, and huge success in research output and income, have all transformed PIR at Ednburgh.

John Peterson, head of PIR, said, 'We are thrilled with this result, which shows that Edinburgh Politics and IR has advanced in terms of research excellence more than any other UK counterpart since the last RAE. It reflects how immensely talented and industrious our colleagues are, as well as the vibrancy of our research culture'.

We aim to build on this over the next 5 years to ensure an even better position in the next Research Excellence Framework.
