Is Believing In God Evolutionarily Advantageous?

Over the last few months, the National Public Radio (NPR) program "All Things Considered", with a weekly audience of 13 million across the USA, has been airing a series of stories called "The Human Edge," about how we evolved into modern human beings.

Last week's program “Is Believing In God Evolutionarily Advantageous?” (aired 30 August 2010), examines religion from an evolutionary perspective.

NPR's Alix Spiegel talked to Jesse Bering and Dominic Johnson who are collaborating on a project based at Edinburgh on the Evolution of Religion, examining whether belief in supernatural agents may confer an advantage to Darwinian fitness by promoting cooperation.
