Politics and International Relations (PIR): News

John Peterson speaks at SNP Burns Night

Bad Scottish jokes (and more serious points) from PIR Professor

No one celebrates Burns Night quite like the Scottish National Party. In a surprise move, PIR’s John Peterson (Professor of International Politics) was invited to a Burns Night Supper on 24th January to deliver the ‘toast to the immortal memory’ of Scotland’s Bard.

The invitation came from Jim Orr (pictured below with John), a graduate of one of PIR’s taught postgraduate degrees, who is now an SNP Councilor for the city of Edinburgh. Featured speakers alongside John were Christina McKelvie MSP, Chair of the Scottish Parliament’s European and External Relations Committee, Jim Eadie MSP (for Edinburgh South) and Steve Cardownie (also an SNP Councilor).

John mostly told bad Scottish jokes, but also made a point to argue that Robbie Burns is, and should be, immortal because he speaks so directly to the oppressed nations of the world.
