Politics and International Relations (PIR): News

Where are PIR graduates heading next year?

Congratulations to all PIR students graduating this week. Interested to see where some of our graduates are heading next year? Here’s a selection of their destinations and how the PIR curriculum helped them get there.

Daniel Mullen, Intern, European Union-Latin America and the Caribbean (EU-LAC) Foundation, Hamburg, Germany

“…my theoretical knowledge, specifically in Research Design and basic IR theory was complemented by my involvement as President of the Latin American Society at the University. By having the theoretical practices and keeping updated with contemporary events which had an effect in the world it allowed me to organise several of the academic events we hosted with the society as well as to network with academics and professionals in an adequate and insightful manner. I also applied for the Principal's Go Abroad Fund and the Erasmus Traineeship grant which I received both to finance this opportunity. “

Tamsin Long, Civil Service Fast Stream, UK

“I think the opportunity to study abroad in the USA through PIR was especially important in helping me reach my destination. Furthermore, the engaging curriculum and particularly honours courses at Edinburgh encouraged me to pursue a career in politics after my degree.”

Aslak Veierud Busch, Trainee, Norwegian embassy, Tallinn

“I got to get deeply involved with the Europa institute and was free to take courses that specialised in my favourite topic, and the interviewers said they were very impressed with my immersion in European affairs through my degree, so specialising in third and fourth year was very helpful!”

Stuart Dunlop, Business Development and Strategy Graduate position, Raytheon UK, London

“The PIR curriculum (particularly courses in Global Security, War & Justice and Armed Force & Society) assisted in building a more complete picture of the role, size and operations of the defence industry, and a general focus on security, geopolitics and IR increased my desire to work in defence and military operations.”

Apurv Gupta, Management Consulting Analyst, Accenture, UK

“The core skill of evaluating the impact of global political developments on various stakeholders, I learnt at Edinburgh, stood out to private sector employers - who are increasingly searching for graduates adept at both, political awareness and business aptitude”

Kate Dearden, National Chair of Labour Students, Labour Party, Westminster

“Joining Edinburgh Labour Students!”

Elisabeth Magnes, MA EU International Relations and Diplomacy Studies, College of Europe

“Being part of the Edinburgh University EU Society and taking various EU related courses were definitely a stepping stone to continuing with this programme, and PIR staff was very helpful in advising me during the application process. “

Alasdair Keane, MA Broadcast Journalism, Cardiff University

“The range of course from Scottish devolution to Russian politics and everything in between have provided a fantastic grounding to enter political journalism”
