Law and War in the 21st Century
BISA-ILAW workshop at The University of Edinburgh, 6 September 2017
We are delighted to announce the first full-day workshop of the reconvened BISA-ILAW group, which will take place at the University of Edinburgh on 6 September 2017. We welcome paper proposals that consider the relationship of law to the conduct of war in the 21st century especially in the context of the fallout from the Iraq war and following the release of the Chilcot report. Key themes include:
a) how legal issues have become central to discourses around the legitimacy of launching military operations, including debates about the legal merits of arguments for humanitarian intervention and self-defence;
b) the relationship between international human rights law and international humanitarian law in the context of different types of armed conflicts and the impact on deliberations around necessity, discrimination and proportionality; and
c) discourses around the way that military operations are conducted, in the context of increased ‘judicialisation’, ‘lawfare’ and international judicial intervention.
Abstracts and short bios should be sent to Dr Andrea Birdsall (firstname.lastname@example.org) by the deadline of Friday 5 May 2017.
The workshop will be free to attend. A limited number of travel bursaries are available for postgraduate students and early career (post-doctorate) researchers.
