Computer modelling is widely used for planning and decision support in large scale capital planning and in public policy, as well as many other situations of decision making in complex circumstances. This presentation will review key issues in linking models and the real word, with the help of quotations from a number of prominent experts. While specific examples are from energy systems, the issues discussed are of general relevance in policy discussion making, and both technical and institutional aspects of the use of modelling will be covered. The work will also briefly discuss current work on uncertainty in government modelling at the Alan Turing Institute.
Speaker: Chris Dent (Turing Institute/University of Edinburgh)
Organised with the British Politics Research Group.
