Middle East Research Group
The Middle East Research Group, convened by Dr Lucy Abbott, brings together the research activities undertaken by academic staff and postgraduates from across the College of Humanities and Social Science with a research interest and expertise on the contemporary politics and international relations of the Middle East.
PIR members are explicitly engaged in research-led teaching and have developed specialist courses related to the Middle East at Honours and Masters levels including: The Politics of the Middle East, Political Islam, The Middle East in International Relations, Gulf Politics and most recently Politics of Oil, Law, Violence, and Humanity and Social Movements and Collective Action in the Middle East (all running for the first time in 2019-20). We also offer the specialist MSc International Relations of the Middle East and MSc International Relations of the Middle East with Arabic programmes.
Contemporary Middle East Series 2019-20
The Contemporary Middle East Series, sponsored by PIR, brings together expertise on Middle East from PIR, the School of Social and Political Science and a wider international network of scholars. To date this interdisciplinary series has featured colleagues' research, invited external experts, briefing roundtables and teach-ins on contemporary and emergent issues.
