Ph.D., Philosophy, University of St Andrews
Christopher grew up in Stranraer in South West Scotland. He studied as an undergraduate at the University of St Andrews, received master’s training at the Universities of Cambridge and Edinburgh, and was a visiting student at the University of Oxford. He was awarded his Ph.D. in Philosophy from St Andrews in 2011. His thesis focused on drawing out various themes in Mill’s philosophy by situating it within the context of the Romantic Movement. More information about his work can be found at http://edinburgh.academia.edu/ChristopherMacleod.
Christopher works mainly on the philosophy of John Stuart Mill: the foundations Mill offers for his theory of practical and theoretical reason, and his connections with the Romantic Movement. He has a wide a range of interests in philosophy and political theory, however, and is also currently working on the Philosophy of International Criminal Law. In particular, he is interested in the nature of genocide and crimes against humanity – the extent to which they can be said to embody ‘real’ moral categories, what this might be taken to mean, and how we could know. This research interest feeds into a more general concern with methodological issues in political philosophy and theory.
During semester 1, Christopher will be convening and teaching on ‘Methods in Political Theory’ for the M.Sc. in International Political Theory.
During semester 2, he will be teaching on 'War and Morality' and 'Internation Political Theory of Human Rights' for the M.Sc. in International Political Theory, and 'War and Justice' at Honours level. He will be convening and teaching 'Republicanism and the Social Contract' for the School of History.
