Biographical Statement

Claire is a Lecturer in International Relations, having completed her Ph.D on the construction of military masculinities in the British Army on Peace Support Operations in October 2007.  Prior to her academic career, she has worked for a variety of human rights and international development NGOs, including Amnesty International, Jubilee 2000 and Global Perspective.

Research Interests and Teaching

Claire's research interests lie at the intersection of international security, IR theory and gender politics.  Her work focuses on gender and, in particular, hegemonic masculinity, and applies new theoretical insights to current international issues, such as humanitarian intervention, peace-building and nuclear proliferation.

Claire has been involved in teaching a variety of courses at the University of Edinburgh, including Gender and International Relations, International Security, International Cooperation in Europe and Beyond and Contemporary Feminist Thought.  In 2011-12 she is teaching War and Justice (Semester 2) and the Global Politics of Sex and Gender (Semester 2).

Claire is a member of the International Politics Research Group, the Gender and Politics Research Group, and the Just World Institute.
