Campaign neglect and marginality: how UK political parties may be risking their electoral security
During UK election campaigns, the main political parties habitually target their resources on the most marginal constituencies. But what about other constituencies?
Previous research has suggested that intense constituency campaigning is effective in marginal constituencies, but what effect does a lack (or indeed an absence) of campaigning have in safe constituencies?
My research aims to answer this by investigating data from a range of sources covering campaign spending and campaign activity over the 1987 to 2010 period. It will examine the effect of marginality upon campaign intensity seeking to prove the hypothesis that the most intense campaigns occur in the most marginal constituencies. Once this has been established, I will explore the effect of campaign intensity on electoral outcomes- specifically seat change, turnout and vote share.
